The main rules of a Match Fishing League are simple:
- Only three members of a team can fish at any one time, one of which to be responsible for managing the boat – this responsibility can be shared
- The home team decides the location, target species and any equipment restrictions such as line length, line weight, electronic aids and techniques (e.g. fly fishing)
- The match runs for up to five hours.
- Generally the team with the most catches of the target species in a legal size wins, though an extra bonus may be provided for the largest fish of the day
- The losing team has to clean both boats!
